In the movie Pelé: Birth of a Legend, there is a scene in which a young Pelé, a member of the Brazilian national football (soccer) team, walks into a hotel dining room full of tense teammates eating breakfast as they prepare for the finals of the 1958 World Cup. The Brazilians, considered the underdogs throughout the games, were anxiously heading into the finals against the mighty Swedish team.
The night before, Pelé’s father reminded the sixteen-year-old of what Brazilians call ginga, a beautiful – almost magical – style of play full of joy and finesse. It is a Brazilian expression of moving freely and loosely, fostering creativity and harmony, and Pele’s father urged him to bring back the magic of ginga to his team.
I encourage you to watch the movie (currently offered on Netflix), both to see if his father’s plan was successful and to witness the vision for the art of soccer we want to bring to our North County community. Sports – in this case, soccer – bring together families and players from different backgrounds, social status and viewpoints to form a unity, a bond, among them all. Like Pelé, we will strive to bring that same magic, joy and beauty to our play.
For this reason and many others, the future is bright for North County Matrix. We want you to feel confident in knowing that our continuous dedication to this vision will allow us to offer your young athlete the very best experience at an exceptional value.
I am honored to take on the role of Director of Coaching for North County Matrix and am so happy to be a part of this extraordinary community.
We look forward to sharing our ginga with you, especially the fun and joy!
